Why isn't my roofing business showing on Google Maps?
Usually one of four things: the profile is suspended, the primary category is wrong, you're searching from outside your own area, or you're simply further from the searcher than the three businesses being shown. Check suspension first, then category, then where you searched from.
Check these in order
- Is the profile suspended? Sign in and look for a notice. A suspension removes you from Maps completely and nothing else matters until it's resolved.
- Is the primary category Roofing Contractor? A broad category like Contractor or Construction Company caps roofing relevance no matter what else you do.
- Where did you search from? Searching from your own office flatters you, and searching from home may put you outside your own service area. Position varies street by street.
- Is the address configured correctly? If you work from home it should be hidden with service areas set, and displaying it is a common route to suspension.
- Are you new? A recently verified profile takes time to gain any prominence.
The part you can't fix
Distance from the searcher is a ranking input and no optimisation removes it. Roofers feel this more than most because you cover a wide area from one pin, so you'll show strongly near your base and weakly at the edges.
That's normal, not a fault. What it means practically is that a single map position for your whole county is a meaningless number, and anyone reporting one should be asked which postcode they measured from.
What most people get wrong
The instinct when you can't see yourself is to add your town to the business name. It does move things briefly, which is why the advice keeps spreading. It also breaches the guidelines, competitors report it, and the result is a suspension that takes you off the map altogether. Trading a small gain for a total outage is a poor bet in a trade where one storm week matters this much.
Related questions
I can see my competitor but not myself.
Check where you searched from and whether their pin is closer to that point. Proximity explains most of these, and personalised results explain a lot of the rest.
How long until a new profile shows?
Verification is quick; prominence isn't. Expect a new profile to be weak for a while regardless of how complete it is.
Does posting to the profile help?
It's a freshness and engagement signal, not a substitute for the right primary category. Fix the category first.
