Why has my Google Business Profile been suspended, and how do I get it back?
A Google Business Profile is usually suspended for a guideline breach, not fraud. The most common triggers for trades are a virtual or residential address shown publicly, a keyword-stuffed business name, and a category or service-area change that looks like a different business. Fix the breach first, then appeal once.
What to do in the first hour
Don't submit an appeal yet. The single most common reason a reinstatement fails is that the owner appealed before correcting the thing that caused the suspension, which burns the strongest appeal you get.
- Check whether it's a soft suspension (profile still listed but you cannot edit it) or hard (removed from Maps and Search entirely). Hard suspensions are the ones that stop the phone.
- Screenshot the profile as it stands, including the business name, categories, address setting and service areas. You'll need to describe what changed.
- Work out what changed in the last 14 days. Suspensions usually follow an edit: a new name, a new category, an address toggled on, or a bulk change made by an agency.
- Correct the breach before appealing.
- Submit one appeal, with evidence. Multiple appeals don't speed anything up and can stack the queue against you.
The suspension causes that hit trades
Trades get suspended for a narrow set of reasons, and they're different from the reasons a shop or restaurant gets suspended. Almost all of them come down to one thing: Google cannot verify that a real business operates from where the profile says it does.
| Trigger | What it looks like | Fix before appealing |
|---|---|---|
| Address shown publicly for a service-area business | You work from home or a van, but the profile displays a street address | Hide the address and set service areas instead. This is the single biggest cause for trades. |
| Keyword-stuffed business name | "Smith Plumbing | Emergency Plumber Leeds 24/7" | Change it to the name on your invoices, van and paperwork. Exactly that, nothing appended. |
| Virtual office or mailbox address | A registered-office or coworking address used as the business location | Remove it. Google treats it as a lead-generation front regardless of intent. |
| Category change that implies a different business | Switching from Plumber to a broad Contractor category | Revert to the category that matches your actual primary trade. |
| Address shared with another listed business | A home address where a previous business was registered | Expect to prove occupancy and trading. This one takes longest. |
What evidence actually helps an appeal
Reinstatement is a verification decision. The reviewer is deciding whether a real business trades under that name, in that area. Give them documents that show trading, not marketing material.
- A utility bill or business rates bill matching the name and address
- Photographs of signage, branded vehicles and workwear with the business name visible
- Trade body registration with the number legible: Gas Safe, NICEIC, NAPIT, FMB or CHAS
- Business insurance certificate showing the trading name
- A bank statement header or HMRC correspondence with the name and address
What most people get wrong
The advice you'll find on most SEO blogs is to appeal immediately and appeal often. That's close to the opposite of what works. Appeals are reviewed against the profile as it exists at the moment of review, so an appeal submitted before the breach is fixed is an appeal reviewed against a still-breaching profile.
The second mistake is treating the suspension as a search problem. It isn't. It is an identity-verification problem, and until Google is satisfied the business is real and located where it claims, no amount of on-site optimisation moves it.
The third is deleting the profile and starting again. A new profile at the same address, under a similar name, is usually caught faster than the original, and you lose every review you had earned.
How long reinstatement takes
There's no published service level, and anyone quoting you a guaranteed turnaround is inventing it. What we can say is that the variable most within your control is whether the breach was fixed before you appealed, a clean appeal against a corrected profile is a fundamentally different review from a contested one.
Plan for the business to be invisible on Maps meanwhile. That's the part that costs money, and it is why a suspension is worth treating as an emergency rather than an admin task.
Where these figures come from
"google business profile suspended" returns 2,400 monthly UK searches at a £21.06 cost per click and low advertiser competition, measured via Google Ads keyword data on 2 August 2026. It is one of the highest-intent queries in the trades sector: the business is already invisible when the search is made.
Related questions
Can I still get work while my profile is suspended?
Your website can still rank in ordinary organic results, which is exactly why a business that depends entirely on its Google profile is more fragile than it looks. A suspension removes you from Maps and the local pack, not from the web.
Will I lose my reviews?
Reviews are normally restored with the profile on a successful reinstatement. They're lost if you delete the profile and create a new one, which is one reason starting again is a poor idea.
Does hiding my home address hurt my rankings?
No. Service-area businesses are a supported profile type and hiding the address is the correct configuration when you travel to customers. Displaying a residential address you should have hidden is far more likely to cost you the profile entirely.
Should I pay someone to appeal for me?
Only if they tell you what they're fixing before they appeal. If the proposal is to submit appeals repeatedly without changing the profile, that isn't a service worth paying for.
Suspended right now?
Tell us what changed and we'll tell you which breach caused it and what evidence your appeal needs. If it is straightforward we'll say so and you can do it yourself.
