LOCAL SEO FOR UK TRADES BUSINESSES

USEFUL PAGES CLEAR PRIORITIES BUILT AROUND ENQUIRIES

Why isn't my electrical business showing on Google Maps?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Check suspension first, then your category. Electricians hit a problem other trades don't: several plausible categories exist, including Electrician, Electrical Installation Service and Electrical Engineer, and picking the wrong one quietly caps you for the searches you want.

The category problem

Most trades have one obvious category. Electricians have several that all sound correct, and the wrong choice doesn't produce an error, it just limits which searches you're eligible for.

Electrical Engineer in particular attracts electricians who like the sound of it, and it's a different profession serving a different set of searches. If you wire houses, the category is Electrician, and everything else you do belongs in the additional categories rather than the primary one.

Work through these in order

  1. Is the profile suspended? Nothing else matters until it's resolved.
  2. Is the primary category Electrician rather than a broader or adjacent alternative?
  3. Is the address hidden with service areas set? Most electricians work from home or a van, and a displayed residential address is a common route to suspension.
  4. Where did you search from? Position varies street by street, and searching from your own house flatters you.
  5. Are your additional categories doing any work, or have you left them empty?

What most people get wrong

Stuffing services into the business name. "Smith Electrical | Emergency Electrician EICR Leeds" moves things briefly, which is why it persists, and it's a guideline breach competitors report. Losing the profile costs more than the gain, and for a trade where compliance customers verify you before ringing, a name that doesn't match your paperwork also looks wrong to them.

The other is assuming something is broken when the answer is distance. You'll rank well near your base and weakly at the edge of your area. That's proximity, not a fault.

Related questions

Which additional categories are worth adding?

Ones that describe work you genuinely do and want more of, such as electrical testing or EV charger installation. Adding categories you don't serve dilutes relevance and can look inaccurate.

Will changing my primary category lose my rankings?

It changes which searches you're eligible for, so expect movement in both directions. If the current one is wrong, that's still the right fix.

Should I list 24-hour availability?

Only if someone answers. A profile advertising round-the-clock cover that rings out collects reviews saying exactly that.
