Roofing SEO or Google Ads, which should a roofer do first?
If you need work this month, ads. If you want work every month, search. Roofing is the one trade where running both is often right, because storm demand arrives faster than rankings can react and ads are the only lever that moves in hours.
The weather makes this decision differently
In most trades the choice is a budget question. In roofing it's a timing question, because your demand doesn't arrive evenly. A bad weekend in February can produce more enquiries than the whole of July, and rankings can't be turned up on the Monday morning.
Ads can. That's the honest case for paid search in roofing, and it's stronger here than in any other trade we work with.
Where each one earns its place
| Paid ads | Search | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first call | Hours | Months |
| Storm response | Can be switched on same day | Whatever you already rank for |
| Cost per enquiry over time | Flat or rising | Falls as the pages mature |
| What you keep if you stop | Nothing | Rankings that decay slowly |
| Best on | Emergency repair, storm damage | Re-roofing, flat roofing, chimney work |
| Worst on | Broad terms like roofer | Anything you need this week |
If you only do one thing with ads
- Run them on emergency and storm terms only. Those are the searches where somebody rings the first credible result and price sensitivity is lowest.
- Keep re-roofing off paid search at the start. It's a long consideration purchase and you'll pay for clicks from people who buy four months later, if at all.
- Build a negative keyword list on day one. Roofing attracts an enormous amount of irrelevant traffic: roofing supplies, roofing courses, roof racks, roof boxes, jobs.
- Send the click to the matching page, not the homepage. A storm damage ad landing on a general roofing page wastes most of what you paid for.
- Set a daily cap you'd be relaxed losing. Storm weeks can spend a month's budget in two days.
What most roofers get wrong
Turning ads on during the storm. By the time the wind has dropped, every roofer in the county has had the same idea, auction prices are up, and you're bidding against firms who set their campaigns up in September. The campaign needs to exist beforehand, paused, ready to unpause.
The other mistake is treating them as alternatives. They answer different questions. Ads answer "how do I fill next week". Search answers "how do I stop worrying about next year". A roofer with a capacity gap now and a plan for the future usually needs both running for a while.
Related questions
What's a realistic ad budget for a roofer?
Set it from your margin rather than a benchmark. Work out what one won re-roof contributes, then decide how many clicks you're willing to buy against that. If a fortnight's spend exceeds one job's margin, the targeting is too broad.
Do Google Ads help my organic rankings?
No. They're separate systems. What ads do give you is fast data on which roofing terms actually convert, and that's genuinely useful for deciding which pages to build.
Should I use Local Services Ads?
They sit above everything and are worth testing for emergency work. Same caution as any rented channel: the enquiries stop the day you stop paying.
