How many Google reviews does a plumber need?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Enough to look credible against the plumbers ranking in your area, which you can check in ten minutes. What matters more than the total is recency and what they mention. In plumbing, reviews that say somebody turned up when they said they would do more than any count.

What plumbing reviews are actually judging

Read enough plumbing reviews and a pattern appears. They're rarely about pipework, because the customer can't assess that. They're about whether the plumber turned up, whether the price matched the quote, and whether the mess got cleared.

That matters for how you ask. A review that says "came out within the hour on a Sunday and charged what he said" does more for the next customer than five that say "great service".

Set your own benchmark

  1. Search your main plumbing term from the middle of your patch, not from your yard.
  2. Note the review count, rating and most recent review date for the three in the map pack.
  3. Recency is the number most people skip and the one that tells you most.
  4. Aim to be credible against that group, not to hit a round figure.
  5. Recheck quarterly. If their recent count grows faster than yours, you're slipping regardless of totals.

Getting them, without breaking the rules

  • Ask at the end of the job while the relief is fresh, not by email three days later
  • Emergency jobs are your best source. Somebody whose leak stopped at midnight will write you a proper review
  • Keep the link as a QR code on the invoice and in the van
  • Reply to all of them, including the good ones
  • Never offer a discount or anything else in exchange. It breaches platform rules, reviews can be removed in bulk, and in the UK it also risks consumer protection rules

What most plumbers get wrong

Only asking after big jobs. The emergency call-out at 11pm is your best review opportunity in the whole trade and it's the one most plumbers skip because they're tired and want to go home. Send the link from the van before you drive off.

The other mistake is arguing with a negative review about pricing. Every future customer reads the reply, and a calm explanation of what the call-out fee covers persuades far more people than being right does.

Related questions

How do I handle a review about a call-out charge?

Reply explaining what it covers and that it's published on the site. Then check that it actually is. Most of these disputes trace back to a fee that was never stated up front.

Do reviews on directories help my Google ranking?

They build trust and are worth having, but Google reviews attach to the profile competing in the map pack.

Is a perfect five-star average better?

Not always. A flawless score across a handful of reviews can read as less believable than a strong average across many.
